BIOGRAPHY

SUMMARY

Ivan Cremer (1984) is a Dutch artist living and working in-between Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands. Growing up in close relation to several European sculptors, painters, and architects, Ivan Cremer was inspired to pick up the hammer at a young age. Following his grandfather’s footsteps, Ivan Cremer became an architect in order to construct his dreams. After he received both his Bachelor and Master of Science in Architecture at the Technical University of Delft, he practiced as an architect in New York (2011-2014) and Los Angeles (2014-2018) before turning to art full-time, where he was able to implement his architectural experimentation in his art infused with inspiration drawn from various architectural styles like constructivism, modernism, and brutalism.

His sculptures are comprised of elements that have strong connections with their subject matter, whether through geography, history, or place. Viewing his practice as a whole, there is a neat symbiosis between subject and material, which is to say they guide one another towards the renderings Cremer seeks to narrativize. For instance, discarded materials found by Cremer amongst industrial ruins are recontextualized into ledgers of time and symbols of decay.

Cremer’s work has been featured in several exhibitions in the United States and Europe. Notably, in mid-2019, Cremer was commissioned to install his monumental work, “Birth of Apollo,” for the Amsterdam sculptural biennale Artzuid. A project he followed up with the last work in that triptych with the Solo show ‘Origins,’ a tribute to the brutalist architecture of ‘De Thomaskerk’ by the modernist architect Karel Sijmons, also on view during the Amsterdam sculpture Biennale of Amsterdam. In this show, Cremer collaborated with the choreographer Hans van Manen, whose choreography ‘Without Words’ was the prelude to Cremer’s sculptural installation. In 2022, Cremer’s larger works were on view at the Museum garden of Kasteel Het Nijenhuis / De Fundatie and at the former Royal Palace, Soestdijk. As well as various gallery exhibitions in places like Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, and the south of France and Italy.

Cremer is currently working on several private commissions for the Netherlands and Italy, as well as a summer show that will open at Lieu d’Art Contemporain in Narbonne, France, on July 1, until September 30th, 2023.
